1955 Austin Healey 100S Recreation
The Austin-Healey 100S is a rare, lightweight, and high-performance racing version of the standard Austin-Healey 100, produced exclusively in 1955. The "S" designation was inspired by the Sebring 12-hour race, where a prototype finished third in 1954. To achieve its competitive edge, the 100S featured a unique design and specialized engineering. Its body and Westlake cylinder head were crafted from aluminium to reduce weight by around 200 pounds compared to the standard model. Further weight-saving measures included the removal of bumpers, the soft top, and the use of a plastic windscreen.
The 2,660cc four-cylinder engine was significantly upgraded with a high-lift camshaft and larger carburettors, resulting in a performance boost to 132 bhp. Only 50 of these factory-built sports-racers were originally made, making the 100S a highly sought-after and valuable collector's item today. A key innovation for the model was its Dunlop disc brakes on all four wheels, making it one of the first production cars in the world to feature this advanced technology.
Visually, the 100S is distinguished by its smaller, oval grille, bonnet louvers, and a leather bonnet strap. It was a successful racer for both factory teams and privateers in the 1950s, though one car was tragically involved in the 1955 Le Mans disaster. While original examples are extremely rare, some specialist companies create authentic recreations for enthusiasts.
