1964 Austin Healey 3000 MKIII BJ8 Phase 1
By the early 1960s, Austin-Healey 3000 sales remained respectable, but the writing was on the wall. The design was now more than a decade old and faced increasingly stiff competition from newer sports cars such as the Jaguar E-Type and MGB. While the Healey continued to enjoy success in international motorsport, it was clear that if the model was to remain competitive, a significant update was required.
That update arrived in 1964 with the introduction of the Austin-Healey 3000 MkIII, the final and most refined version of the famous ‘Big Healey’. Production had actually begun in late 1963, but the official launch was delayed until February 1964 to allow dealers, particularly in the United States, to build stock for immediate delivery.
The MkIII was introduced in two stages. The initial ‘Phase One’ cars featured a substantially revised interior and a more powerful engine, while the later ‘Phase Two’ models, introduced just three months later, incorporated major chassis and suspension changes. The phased launch was necessary because not all of the engineering changes could be implemented simultaneously without delaying production.
Inside, the MkIII represented the biggest step forward in the Healey’s history. A completely redesigned cockpit featured a full walnut-veneered dashboard, centre console, lockable glovebox and updated instrumentation, including a 140mph speedometer. Redesigned seats, improved weather equipment and significantly better heat insulation transformed comfort levels, helping bring the Healey closer to the refinement expected of contemporary sports cars.
Under the bonnet, a revised camshaft and larger twin SU HD8 carburettors increased power output to 148bhp. A new twin-exit exhaust system, servo-assisted brakes and numerous detail improvements further enhanced the driving experience. Combined with the wind-up windows and improved hood introduced in 1962, the MkIII offered a level of sophistication that rivalled far more expensive sports cars.
These developments gave the ageing Healey a new lease of life. Sales during 1964 rose by around 25 percent compared with the previous year, and road testers continued to praise the car's exceptional value. Despite its advancing years, the MkIII remained one of the least expensive ways to enjoy genuine 120mph performance.
Performance figures were impressive even by modern standards. Contemporary road tests recorded 0-60mph in under 10 seconds and a top speed comfortably above 120mph. Fuel economy was also improved, with touring figures of around 24mpg achievable. The result was the most capable, refined and desirable version of the Austin-Healey 3000 ever produced – a fitting finale to one of Britain's most charismatic sports cars.
This exceptional Austin Healey 3000 MkIII Phase 1 was built between 17th and 19th March 1964 for the North American market and is the 1,106th Phase 1 car produced. It left the Abingdon factory on 22nd March 1964, destined for Philadelphia, USA.
Repatriated to the UK in 2012, the car has since undergone an extraordinary 14-year, no-expense-spared, nut-and-bolt restoration. Built on a new chassis with restored inner structure. Every aspect has been meticulously returned to its original factory specification, finished in its correct and striking Colorado Red with black interior. The quality of the restoration is immediately apparent, with the underside finished to the same exacting standard as the exterior, making this a truly show-stopping example.
Power comes from a beautifully rebuilt Richard Parker engine that is smooth, responsive and eager throughout the rev range. The rebuilt gearbox offers precise, effortless gear changes, while the overdrive engages seamlessly. Fitted with new chrome wire wheels and Blockley tyres, the car inspires confidence on the road, combining superb handling with a remarkably composed ride over Britain's country lanes.
The hood and weather equipment have been expertly tailored by Don Trimming of Birmingham, ensuring both originality and excellent fit and finish.
